A total of $25 million has been set aside for academic programs and facilities on the University of Maryland’s campuses in Baltimore and College Park. The money comes from the Maryland Universal Access to Education Fund, a philanthropic investment from philanthropist and businessman, Frank Batten Jr.
That money will be used to establish the Frank L. Batten, Jr. Research, Innovation and Academic Excellence (REIARE) Fund. That will support programs at both campuses that target students and faculty from low-income backgrounds, including those who are black and Latino.
The total commitment to the fund is $5 million at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County and $10 million at the University of Maryland, College Park.
“The University of Maryland’s commitment is the right and moral thing to do,” said UMD President Wallace D. Loh, Ph.D., in a statement. “This funding is transformative for the university and region, helping us fulfill our mission to provide a quality and equal education to as many students as possible and for faculty and staff to work in and contribute to a better and more just world.”
What’s next: UMD will seek more donations and sponsorships. The Batten’s long-term support is a “game-changer,” said UMD Vice President and Chief of Staff Peter Valls.
“I am deeply moved and humbled by the generosity of this UMD family,” Batten said in a statement. “My commitment to this university and to this nation is rooted in deep gratitude to the University of Maryland for having provided me the best education in the world.”
The UMD Board of Regents in October voted to make the fund permanent as the Batten Board of Trustees with UMD President Wallace D. Loh, Ph.D. were still discussing the issue.
A portion of the Batten’s philanthropy will be used to fund research and study, said Marlana Santana, a spokeswoman for UMD.
